What should I do if I don’t receive my W-2 form(s) and other tax documents?

According to the IRS, payers/employers are required to issue W-2 forms and other tax documents (1099s and 1098s) by January 31st. If you still haven’t received these forms by then, you should follow these steps:

1.     Check online on your employer’s or bank’s website, or your job email to see if the documents were posted there.

2.    Contact the employer/payer.

3.    Call the IRS or go in person to a local IRS office if your employer/payer has not issued your W-2 form or if it is out of business.

4.    File Form 4852 which is a substitute for Form W-2, Form W-2c, and Form 1099-R, and is completed by taxpayers when:

  • “Their employer or payer does not give them a Form W-2 or Form 1099-R” (IRS).

  • “An employer or payer has issued an incorrect Form W-2 or Form 1099-R” (IRS).

Note: If you receive your W-2 form after filing form 4852 and the information doesn’t match, you may need to amend your return by filing form 1040-X.

Once you receive all your tax documents, we can prepare a Free Federal tax estimate to figure out how much refund you will get or if you owe anything to the IRS before filing your tax return.
